At Walter E. Smithe Furniture & Design, we pride ourselves on providing quality products that will last for years to come. A little regular maintenance means a longer life for your investment. Here are some tips to keep your furniture looking its best and adding to the longevity of the pieces

Upholstery Care

Cushions

We tend to gravitate towards our favorite spot on the sofa. In order to avoid those areas getting worn down faster, its best to play a little “musical cushions” every now and then. Not only do you want to flip your cushions over, it's also a good idea to rotate them to different seats on the sofa to even out the wear.

Especially if you have a down-blend cushion, they require more maintenance to keep a nice crown to the cushion. Just like a down pillow, you'll need to fluff up the down to maintain the ideal comfort.

Fabric Care

Vacuuming is imperative for the longevity of fabric. When dust particles settle on fabric, not only can they cause overall dinginess, they can actually break down the fiber strength over time. Take a few extra minutes with your attachments or a hand held vacuum to clean your upholstery.

Hopefully you invested in our SmitheKote Stain Removal product and warranty with your purchase - it's the best peace of mind we can offer against spills from foods, beverages, and human/pet stains. You can find out more about caring for your upholstery with our SmitheKote care kits here. If you chose not to get SmitheKote, it may not be too late - Call us at 1-800-WITH-AN-E, and ask about an in-home application.

Leather Care

An investment in leather is a great long-term choice - it is an extremely durable textile for furnishings! It's important that you regularly care for the product. The most crucial thing to remember is to condition it every 3-6 months, or more often in rooms that are dry or get a lot of direct sunlight. Leather conditioner comes standard with our SmitheKote protection, and refills are available for no charge at any showroom.

Fading

If your room gets a lot of direct sunlight, it is best to keep your upholstery protected from it, as fabrics, leathers, and even area rugs will fade with prolonged exposure. During the most prevalent times of direct sunlight, close blinds or window treatments to protect your furnishings.
